People often ask me how I can be so disciplined and consistent at what I’m doing, and I always struggle to come up with an answer because I don’t feel like there are a lot of things that I’m actively doing. But then I realized it’s not the things I’m doing actively, but rather the things I’m doing passively, like my habits, that are just so rooted in my mind that I don’t even notice them anymore. I’m gonna share my top 3 habits with you here in hopes that they have the same effect on you as they have on me.
Habit 1: Clean your room.
This sounds super silly and self-improvement-guru-like, but trust me on this one. I personally cannot get work done when my room is messy e.g. clothes on the floor, bed not made. Because I always have it in the back of my mind, and it keeps me from really locking in and doing deep, focused work. That’s why I made keeping my room clean a habit. I neither throw clothes on the floor, leave my bed unmade, nor let dishes stand around. So when it comes to locking in, I have no excuse like “oh, I gotta clean first” that keeps me from getting work done.
Habit 2: Block out noise.
Install that screen time blocker, turn on DnD, or lock your phone away. Whatever works best for you, but don’t destroy your focus by having notifications pop up while you’re working/studying. It is definitely okay to be on your phone or even scroll on social media during a break, but if you can’t spend 45 minutes locked in on something without touching your phone, it’s not looking good for you.
So, clean room, no phone distraction. What’s left?
Habit 3: Find your ‘Why’.
There has to be a bigger reason behind why you’re trying to be disciplined or why you’re trying to be consistent. If there is no bigger ‘why,’ then why are you wasting time and energy on it? Of course, there might be an exam or a task that is completely annoying, I fully get that and feel the same. But that exam contributes to your degree, which opens up the door to your dream job. Or that annoying task might open up a new client. Whenever you feel unmotivated or down, remind yourself of that bigger reason. Giving up on that is way harder than giving up on a boring task.
You see, none of these tips are “magic” or secret hacks somebody gatekeeps from you. They are basic, actionable, yet extremely effective steps you can take today to be more consistent and disciplined. I hope you can use them too and find as much value as possible in them.
💡 My Recommendation of the Week:
In terms of discipline and consistency, I really liked two books: Atomic Habits and Ikigai. Atomic Habits is more about actually building and maintaining good habits, while Ikigai is more about finding your “Why” and higher reason. Of course, you don’t need any of these books to be more consistent, I just enjoyed reading them and felt like I should share them.
Also since this is the first Newsletter rolled out to a lot of people (250 Subscribers so far, thank you so much!!) I would love if you could give me honest Feedback on it. Either via Instagram DM or my email [email protected].
Have a nice week,
Chris
